Vintage 8mm Film Projectors Running in 2016

So this topic we have felt compelled to write a blog on for some time as it is probably one of the most frequent topics to come up in conversation when we are speaking with our Customers about 8mm Cine Film Transfers, and what prompted us to take time away from our very busy Christmas Transfer schedule was a Customer walked in to The Cine Film Factory Studio this Week clutching armfuls of Super 8 Film and a 8mm Dual Gauge Projector frantic as to why they wouldn’t play on the Projector anymore (Interesting Photos Below Alert!).

The objective of the Cine Film Projector Blog is we want to educate Customers on, is the operational running of 8mm Cine Film Projectors Today in 2016 and how these Projectors can potentially damage your precious Cine Films for a number of reasons, Now you may be thinking as you have or may have been told that your projector is a Bell & Howell – Sankyo – Eumig – Prinz Magnon Etc the make doesn’t matter, Yes these were good units back in 1970`s however some 40 years later whilst they have been tucked out of the way in the Attic significant deterioration has been taking effect, you then discover your Kodak Kodachrome Super 8 collection alongside the projector in the box and decide great I’m going to get these transferred with The Cine Film Factory, however firstly I want to fire up the projector to see what is on the Super 8 before sending it over to us.

This is where We shout STOP!!! don’t do this, you will potentially turn your precious 8mm film in shredded film something that resembles the remnants from a Fellows Paper shredder, which will inevitably render your Film useless to Transfer, this also goes for buying Projectors over the internet on popular Auction Sites where the seller states all sorts about how shiny it is and it looks in good condition for it age Etc Etc Yawn Avoid don’t do it.

Firstly there are 2 main issues when powering up Projectors that haven’t been used for many years firstly The rubber drive belt will have perished consuming itself with a sticky fungus (See Images from the Projector as mention in our opening to our Blog)

Secondly the once bright 100w Bulb will no longer shine or if it does very soon after accepting power will go pop.

Whilst drive belts & Bulbs can be replaced you then have to consider the Dusts that has attached itself to the inner workings around the greased components/cogs this is where we most commonly find the damage to Film occurs where the cogs no longer turn correctly through the build up of deposits they then snag up the Film.

This is where we come in of course and always suggest leaving the above and don’t risk, We have a range of Digital Transfers services we can offer you for your Films if you want to be able to view again before committing to DVDs, our most popular service is to have them transferred to Digital Files with a corresponding numerical key created for you, We can pop them on a handy USB for you to inspect at your leisure on your own PC when have looked and if you decide what and where you would like created to DVDs we retain the same digital back up and a simple call to the cine film factory studio 01903 690543 can organise all of this for you.

The enjoyment Transferred Film Provides to all Situations

Here is a recent Customer order of 8mm Cine Films transferred to DVDs
Here is a recent Customer order of 8mm Cine Films transferred to DVDs

We at The Cine Film Factory have been have been thinking about writing a Blog in respect of how Film Transferred provides so much in enjoyment to everyone of our Customers who have this done & offers stimulation to others.

Then a perfect example was requested recently which gave us the opportunity to consider this Blog further & for many reasons feel now is the time to share.
Whilst over the years of Transferring 8mm 9.5mm 16mm Film to DVDs & Digital, thought we had heard from listening to Customers requests I.e. Golden Wedding Anniversary – Birthday – Fathers Day all these poignant Days in people’s lives!

Then this one day The Cine Film Factory were approached by a Customer & presented with a very unique situation being, a immediate Family member had been involved in a serious accident at work, unfortunately leaving the person in question with significant Brain Damage showing no response of emotion.
With this situation with the legalities & Insurance companies involved there was an argument being played out with the Courts that the person would not have the ability to respond to their surroundings.

The Family were of course ever hopeful that a miracle would come of this terrible situation, We were advised that a therapist had suggested that sometimes sounds and visuals from the past can have stimulation in such situations, this now formed part of the reasoning as to the decisions for Care to be established.
We were presented with a selection of 8mm Cine Films of the person from their childhood to transfer to DVDs at the earliest opportunity, of course from understanding the situation stepped forward to assist as a matter of urgency.
After the Transfer the feedback we received from the family with huge anticipation on our part was delivered that they were amazed and so were the Doctors and care nurses that they had responded and made noises of recognition & cried, the Brain had drawn stimulation from the images recognised from riding a bike as a child, from a horrendous situation came positives & worked and we are told the DVDs of the Transfers are of huge source of comfort to the individual and are played regularly as they provide an early connection in their life that they have digressed to given the situation they are in.
The Family have since located VHS – Hi 8 Media that they have since had transferred to provide further enjoyment all carried out at The Cine Film Factory Studio in Worthing.

We have also since carried out Family Film transfers for families with loved ones suffering with Dementia – Parkinson’s & other Brain related problems as the power of personal film collection memories provide so much comfort to remember the early years of life & can also help the memory in certain situations.
We have even carried out Film Transfers speedily for families to comfort those in the late stages of terminal Cancer as a comfort source for final hours even sounds & voices can be of huge comfort.

With all of this in mind want to reach out to anyone who may be able to relate to any of these situations to contact us without delay to discuss the Film Transfers.

Sony is finally saying goodbye to this 40-year-old device

BetamaxThe Betamax was released back in 1975, but it’s only now that Sony has decided to stop selling cassettes for it.
When it was released back in 1975, the Betamax kicked off a major format war surrounding video recorders.
While VHS eventually dominated the industry, Sony continued to support its format long after its launch.
It had stopped manufacturing the Betamax back in 2002 (having stopped selling them around the world in 1998) but continued to sell the cassettes and offer repairs for existing devices.
Now 13 years later, the company announced it will finally stop selling Betamax cassettes from March of next year, say Engadget.
The Betamax was Sony’s attempt to dictate the video recording market, but while it was one of the first video machines to be commercially successful, it sold 2.3 million unit in 1984, it eventually lost out to VHS.
The main reason was because Betamax could only record one hour of footage at a time while VHS could record two or more.
While Betamax cassettes were smaller, their inability to record longer shows or movies was a significant flaw. Sony did improve the duration of its tapes, and made the Betamax cheaper, the damage was already done.
If you still happen to use one, then you have a few more months to stock up on cassettes and supplies for it.

8mm Cine Film or 16mm Film Transferred to Digital Files

IMG_9157

We Need Your Help!

As you may or may not be aware we offer a selection of transfer services here at The Cine Film Factory, however by far as of recent months the majority of our Customers are requesting transfer of 8mm cine film & transfer of 16mm film to Digital Video Files, over DVDs which we call service 2, rather than now what is appearing to be outdated transfer of old 8mm & 16mm to DVD, which we call transfer service 1.

Whilst we offer our digital transfer to digital video files for all media types, this ranges between 8mm cine films – 16mm films – vhs video tapes – vhs-c video tapes – video 8 – hi8 tapes – mini dv etc.

Are your Digital Transfers for Private use only – Social Media – or The Cloud?

We would be interested to know why choose digital video files?
Of course we have our own views on the convenience of transferring old film to digital files however as we seem to find out in the media nothing is ever secure in the digital world,
As this blog is being written we see on the News that Customers of the Ashley Madison Website are having their private information displayed for people to see on the internet.

We know from speaking to our Customers the majority find the convenience of having their 8mm & 16mm films transferred to digital video files rather than dvd offers them flexibility to view their film content via their own personal computers at home, let’s remember given the age of some film, these may not have been viewed if at all for many years possibly extending to 10-20-30 plus years.

For many customers we create a key which is assigned to the individual 8mm cine film or 16mm film transfer file, this allows the customer the opportunity to view the transferred films at leisure then come back to us stating which number file they would like to be assigned to DVD-Video, we of course have a back up of the transfers the same as the customer gets so everyone knows what is where.

We have even in the past supplied film we have transferred from the 1920s – 1930s etc onto I Pads for customers, amazing hey! on the other scale imagine going back in time to early 1900s taking an I Pad with your film from this early era, sitting on a bench in a street in a public place whilst watching footage of the current day on the I Pad, could you imagine the reactions of the passersby as to what you are doing.

Well all of the above considered we would love to hear your thoughts on this subject and will share the some ideas you provide on a blog update in the near future.
Please contact us via e mail:- transfer@cinefilmfactory.co.uk

All You Want To Know About The Cine Film Factory

We have written this Blog to provide more information about our Film Transfer service of what we think our Customers would like to know.

Who is The Cine Film Factory and what services do you provide?

1. The Cine Film Factory is located in Sunny Worthing West Sussex (By The Sea) our CEO/Managing Director is Simon Papouis started The Cine Film Factory many years ago after growing up enjoying the special magic of 8mm Cine Film understanding In his words “Understanding with huge interest the migration between Analogue to Digital Media`s” wanting everyone to be able to have access to this migration.
Simon recalls as a teenager spending many Rainy Winter Sundays with his Family in Ferring, West Sussex, watching his Father dust off & crank up the Eumig Super 8 Projector and settle down to relive his & his families precious 8mm Film Collection witnessing for himself the magical experience of emotion & connection brought from these precious memories.
It was those moments in time where like a switch in Simon`s mind The Cine Film Factory was born as he understood having a strong explorative Digital Background decided there must be a more straightforward way to enjoy 8mm Film rather than risk any further damage to such treasured memories, it was then Simon realised how much old media there was to bring into the Digital future, and from that point we have grown in to the Business we are Today having Transferred all Media for Customers from every inch of the United Kingdom.

How long will it take for you to complete a job?

2. As we are an Internet Business we are receiving a wide audience of Customers on a Daily basis from around the UK & our transfer times vary from 5 Working Days to 2 Weeks depending on current cycles of transfers taking place.
Our most common question is how long will my film collection take to complete as we say to all customers once we confirmation of readiness to proceed we will be able to confirm our transfer diary.
We have customers who come to us with special events happening, it may be 50th Wedding Anniversary, Birthday Celebration Etc we always accommodate special requests & even have a fast track system in place to ensure special events are catered for in plenty of time for the special day.

What formats can a film be transferred to?

3. We offer 2 transfer services here at the Cine Film Factory & having been in the film production transfer Business for many years understand no job is ever the same & almost 99.9% of our customers have differing specific requirements.
Service 1 is a transfer of all Film media to DVD-Video this is a no hassle way forward whereby Customers are comfortable with their Content & just want to digitally preserve footage, sit down in a comfortable chair on a rainy afternoon and watch the films via DVD/Blu ray player on TV and Enjoy, we set the DVDs up beautifully with animated menus coordinated themes etc examples of this can be found by following this look to our editing page on our Website.
Service 2 is a transfer of all Film media to Digital Video Files, we have some very comprehensive software that allow us to cater all Video file types available to date, the most popular types are Video files to work on Windows Operating Systems & Apple Mac computers, however we have transferred 1930s footage in the past to Apple I Pads in full HD which showcase beautifully on Apples Retina Screen.
Depending on the amount of Film media to transfer we will recommend the best storage solution for our Customers transfers, this may be Data DVDs USB Flash drives for smaller orders & larger orders we would supply External Hard Drives.
Another option we offer is external hard drive to hold content being specifically catered towards Customers who would like to connect to Home TVs via USB port this is a very popular service as it gives our Customer the opportunity the same as DVD Videos to sit back & enjoy without the worry of losing DVDs Etc however also giving the opportunity to connect to Home PC if they wish to edit some content themselves. we call it having the Best of both worlds.

What type of equipment is used in the film transfers?

4. All our transfers are carried out in House un like some of our competitors we are not a middle man Transfer Business taking Films from Customer & shipping out to a third party Business to transfer.
All our transfer systems especially our 8mm Cine Film Transfer Units & 16mm Transfer units have all been specifically built over the many years by us & we have ironed out issues years ago & our transfer units are very fine tuned machines which make our transfers Today look wonderful.
An interesting point is our Systems have now been patented as they are unique to us & we are not ruling out in the future selling our units to the Transfer Market as we often have enquiries from competitors & people looking to start up if we can supply our Transfer units for 8mm Film – Super 8 – Regular 8 & 16mm.
What We & Our Customers love about our transfers is the Organic Rawness of the 8mm footage, we do not take away from the natural look that 8mm Cine Films provide leaving the natural graininess by introduce intensive colour to 8mm which takes so much form the original film & let’s remember part of the experience is for our Customers to remember there footage along with how they remember the nostalgic images they remember form the 8mm projector.
We love to showcase some of our projects on our Website & a direct link to our 8mm Cine Film Transfers & 16mm HD Transfers can be viewed by clicking on the following link :-
http://www.cinefilmfactory.co.uk/

How much film can fit on a DVD?

5. In relation to transfer times on DVDs this varies as to the media so for example 8mm Cine Film Transfers we never extend over 1 Hour Per DVD the reason for this is DVD cramming of footage over 1 Hour will only result in loss of resolution from the transfers as the DVD will look prior to Burning to compensate Data space saving & will lessen the quality hence we do not extend periods over 1 Hour, Regards other Formats we Transfer VHS – VHS-c – Hi 8 – Video 8 – Mini DV these do have flexibility for longer run times as we use different systems for these resolution lose is not really noticeable to the natural eye.

What is the quality like?

6. The qualities all depend on what the condition of the original media is like, our transfers will always give a fresh shiny feel to Transfers, however we are all limited to correction of poor focusing, however we have manual systems in place were we can correct 8mm Cine Film Transfers & 16mm Film Transfers & 9.5mm Film Transfers with manual adjustments of exposure to brighten up dark under exposed frames within film also we use stage filtering as with much of the 8mm Cine Film we have seen over the years this has been shot in Tropical Climates which of course exposes the recording Film this takes of the intense brightness which detracts from the filmed subject matter, let’s not forget the Film Cameras were very basic for the Day, not having the sophisticated technology of Today’s Video Cameras.
We love to showcase some of our projects on our Website & a direct link to our 8mm Cine Film Transfers & 16mm HD Transfers can be viewed by clicking on the following link :-
http://www.cinefilmfactory.co.uk/

Secret of the Sony Walkman as reminisced by Simon & Customer Recently

sony-walkman

The tiny, elegant Sony Walkman launched in 1979, revolutionised how we listened to music & holds fond memories for our founder Simon Papouis.

The Walkman was the i phone of its day – a product so iconic it helped to define a decade. Developed by the Japanese electronics company Sony in the 1970s and Launched worldwide in 1979, it went on to be a symbol of the Eighties’ new-found affluence, consumerism and solipsism. Before the Walkman, portable music had meant lugging around boom boxes the size of large suitcases.
These elephantine pieces of equipment required vast amounts of juice to power their two large, loud speakers, earning them the nickname, “ghetto blasters.” If you were unwise enough to take them anywhere without a power supply then you burnt through piles of expensive batteries in a matter of a couple of hours.
The Walkman, tiny, elegantly modernist and utterly personal, changed all that.
Unlike the boom box, it was truly individual and truly portable.
Legend has it that the very first device was built in 1978 by Sony engineer Nobutoshi Kihara for Sony co-chairman Akio Morita, who wanted to be able to listen to operas during his frequent trans-Pacific plane trips. The -Walkman was certainly liberating.
Suddenly you could listen to music pretty much anywhere, at home, on your way to the office, on a train or plane, or in the gym. And you were in little danger of running out of batteries before the end of a song. Furthermore, its size allowed people to carry many more cassettes with them.
Playing music through a boom box was arguably a more convivial way of enjoying music, but the Walkman showed us new ways to share music. In part because of it the mix-tape was born, with friends and lovers giving cassettes containing their favourite music to one another.

Before long the Sony Walkman had become one of those must have items.
A particularly sought after model was the Sony Walkman Professional’, used by DJs for the famous Eighties beach parties held by proto-ravers in Ibiza and Goa. Even today they remain collectable’ A model in half-decent nick will set you back €150 on Ebay.
The Walkman was also arguably the first wearable piece of technology.
Boom boxes had to be carried around, and although some were able to do this with real panache, levering them onto their shoulders like the star of a mid-Seventies reggae album, most people couldn’t wait to set them down. The Walkman could be comfortably
attached to your belt, or if it was an especially stylish model, dropped casually onto the table of a restaurant or pub, in much the same way as people do with their flagship phones today.
For more than two decades the Walkman reigned supreme. What eventually killed it off was ultimately what has helped to fatally wound the music industry – the digitising of music and the MP3. Then Apple came up with the iPod – an MP3 player that was easy to use, could hold thousands of songs and never needed a battery replacing – the Walkman suddenly looked very old-fashioned. Now even the iPod is on its way out as ever more people favour a single device to cater for their potable entertainment needs.
We recently reminisced about mix-tapes and Walkman’s. We said that when we first saw the technology, it struck us as utterly magical. “Now we carry our record collection, satellite w, several hundred books, telephone and directory, sat-nav, camera, reprohouse, word processor, calculator! newspapers and magazines all in something the size of a packet of cigarettes.
But where is the magic?”
